Kuakata: panoramic sea beach

Kuakata (Bengali: কুয়াকাটা, Rakhine:ကုအာကာတ) is a town in southern Bangladesh known for its panoramic sea beach. Also known as the Shagor Konna (Daughter of the Sea), kuakata is one of the most spectacular places in Bangladesh, as well as a rare scenic beauty spot on the southernmost fringe of the country. Kuakata beach is a sandy expanse 18 kilometres (11 mi) long and 3 kilometres (1.9 mi) wide. From the beach one can have an unobstructed view of both sunrise and sunset over the Bay of Bengal.

Next to the beach lies a vast coconut grove and the protected forest of Gangamati. To the west, the expansive Fatra's Reserved Forest stretches over a large area. To the south, the waters of the sea shimmer. In the winter, a temporary fishing village and dried fish factory spring up at the eastern end of the beach. There are also many teak tree plantations and picnic spots. Alipur is the region’s largest fishing port. During the winter, various species of migratory birds visit the area. There are many archaeological sites and indigenous settlements, such as Keranipara, Mistripara, Seema Buddhist Temple, and Amkholapara, which attract tourists. Kuakata offers a real glimpse into the Rakhine culture and heritage.

Kuakata is also a pilgrimage site for both Hindus and Buddhists. They organize various religious events, including bathing in the sacred waters of Kuakata Beach during festivals like Rash Purnima and Maghi Purnima.

Etymology

The name Kuakata originated from the word 'kua' the Bengali word for "well" which was dug on the seashore by the early Rakhine settlers (Burmese tribes) in quest of collecting drinking water. They landed on the Kuakata coast in the 18th century after being expelled from Arakan (Myanmar) by the Burmese extremists. Afterwards, it has become a tradition of digging wells in the neighbourhoods of Rakhaine tribes for water.

Basic Information

The most attractive spot in Kuakata is its beach. When the large waves of the sea crash onto the shore, the scene is indescribably beautiful. Many people wade into the sea, enjoying the rhythm of the waves, while some swim with the help of tubes.

The coastal zone is the boundary where land meets the ocean, including both shoreline environments and nearby coastal waters. As a low-lying country, Bangladesh faces numerous coastal challenges such as storm surges, floods, tsunamis, sea-level rise, and erosion. Visitors should keep eyes on the weather forecast for a safe travel.
